A Simpler Proof Theory for Nominal Logic

چکیده

Nominal logic is a variant of first-order logic which provides support for reasoning about bound names in abstract syntax. A key feature of nominal logic is the new-quantifier, which quantifies over fresh names (names not appearing in any values considered so far). Previous attempts have been made to develop convenient rules for reasoning with the new-quantifier, but we argue that none of these attempts is completely satisfactory. In this paper we develop a new sequent calculus for nominal logic in which the rules for the newquantifier are much simpler than in previous attempts. We also prove several structural and metatheoretic properties, including cut-elimination, consistency, and conservativity with respect to Pitts’ axiomatization of nominal logic; these proofs are considerably simpler for our system.

Some results on the block numerical range

The main results of this paper are generalizations of classical results from the numerical range to the block numerical range. A different and simpler proof for the Perron-Frobenius theory on the block numerical range of an irreducible nonnegative matrix is given. In addition, the Wielandt's lemma and the Ky Fan's theorem on the block numerical range are extended.

Modelling Generic Judgements

We propose a semantics for the ∇-quantifier of Miller and Tiu. First we consider the case for classical first-order logic. In this case, the interpretation is close to standard Tarski-semantics and completeness can be shown using a standard argument. Then we put our semantics into a broader context by giving a general interpretation of ∇ in categories with binding structure. Since categories wi...

The Semantics of Nominal Logic Programs

Nominal logic programming is a form of logic programming with “concrete” names and binding, based on nominal logic, a theory of alpha-equivalence founded on swapping and freshness constraints. Previous papers have employed different characterizations of the semantics of nominal logic programs, including operational, denotational, and prooftheoretic characterizations. In this paper we give a uni...

1 Embedding of First-Order Nominal Logic into Higher-Order Logic

Nominal logic, also referred to as hybrid logic, is a general term for extensions of ordinary modal logics that introduce a new sort of atomic formulae, the socalled nominals. These nominals are only true at one possible world and false at every other world. The shifter, denoted @, can be used to evaluate the truth of a formula φ at a given world corresponding to nominal i as in @iφ. The simple...

Nominal Logic with Equations Only

Many formal systems, particularly in computer science, may be captured by equations modulated by side conditions asserting the “freshness of names”; these can be reasoned about with Nominal Equational Logic (NEL). Like most logics of this sort NEL employs this notion of freshness as a first class logical connective. However, this can become inconvenient when attempting to translate results from...
